Is it the nudity by itself or the message behind the nudity?
If it is the former, and we strongly believe it is the former, then Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, who posted nude photographs of herself on her blog, is a visionary whose actions will go down in history as the woman who defied an entire nation.
The photographs were published on Almahdy's blog "The Memoirs of a Rebel" that was bombarded by comments praising her bravery and stance, and at the same time deriding her ill-manners and upbringing.
The blog, owned by the 20-year old university student from Cairo, has received over 1.5 million hits.
Almahdy a while ago was caught on tape with her boyfriend defying the rules of a renowned university but expressing affection in public. Elmahdy wrote that the photographs "are screams against a society of violence, racism, sexism, sexual harassment and hypocrisy."
Many are denouncing Elmahdy for going against the country's Islamic traditions from both sides of the fences. The same way many Muslims attacked her for posting her nude self online other praised her for her courage. The uproar is at its peak.
How far will this cry for freedom of expression go especially with the political struggle that is tearing Egypt apart?
